To become a certified school bus driver in Texas, individuals must complete a 20-hour basic training course approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Upon successful completion, participants receive a Texas School Bus Driver Training Certificate.
Validity: Certification is valid for three calendar years from the date of issuance.
Legal Requirement: In accordance with Texas Transportation Code §521.022(e), all school bus drivers must carry a valid certificate indicating they are currently enrolled in or have completed an approved driver safety training course.
Restrictions: Operating a school bus without a valid certification is prohibited.
To maintain eligibility, certified drivers must complete an 8-hour refresher course:
Before Expiration: Completing the course prior to the certificate's expiration ensures the driver remains eligible to operate a school bus without interruption.
After Expiration: If a certificate has expired, the driver has a 12-month window to complete the refresher course. However, the driver is not permitted to operate a school bus until recertified.
