Grade 8 Math STAAR Review Activities

A graphic with colorful pencils and text that reads 'NOW in SPANISH STAAR REVIEW ACTIVITIES REVIEW IMPORTANT MATHEMATICS CONCEPTS IN ENGAGING WAYS GRADES 3-Algebra 1'.

How might we purposefully and effectively review important mathematics concepts for the Grade 8 Math STAAR assessment? The ESC-18 Math Team has created a variety of activities where students practice and apply important grade-level TEKS aligned topics to cement their learning.

8.2D
Ordering Real Numbers
Card Set

Three yellow cards with a chevron pattern, each displaying a different real number for a math card sort activity.

Order a set of real numbers.

8.4B 8.4C 8.5D
Analyzing Proportional and Non-Proportional Relationships
True/False Sort

A worksheet with the title 'Analyzing Proportional & Non-Proportional Relationships True/False Sort' includes a graph, table, and equation related to a water hose discharging water at a constant rate.

Graph proportional and non-proportional relationships and interpret the rate of change for these situations. Use data from a table or graph to determine rate of change and y-intercept. Use a trend line to make predictions.

8.5I
Linear Equations
Scavenger Hunt

Two cards for a math scavenger hunt, one with the equation y = 2x + 3 and a graph, the other with the equation y = -4/3x and a word problem about a plant's growth.

Write an equation in the form y = mx + b to model a linear relationship between two quantities using verbal, numerical, tabular, and graphical representations.

8.7B
Surface Area of Prisms & Cylinders
Dominoes

A set of math dominoes for calculating the surface area of prisms and cylinders. The dominoes feature diagrams of geometric shapes with labeled dimensions and questions about their surface area.

Determine solutions to surface area problems involving rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and cylinders.

8.8D
Angle Relationships
Dominoes

A set of math dominoes with angle relationships problems, featuring diagrams with angles labeled in degrees.

Use informal arguments to establish facts about the angle sum of triangles, exterior angles of triangles, and angles created when parallel lines are cut by a transversal.

8.3C 8.10C
Algebraic Representations for Transformations
Question Stack

Two math problems on cards with black and white stripes and gold polka dots. The problems involve geometric transformations on a coordinate plane.

Use an algebraic representation to explain the effects of dilations, translations, reflections, and rotations.

8.5G
Function or Not
Card Sort

A set of colorful cards for a math activity called 'Function or Not? Card Sort'.

Identify functions using sets of ordered pairs, tables, mappings, and graphs.

8.7A
Volume of Cylinders, Cones, & Spheres
Sum It Up

A math worksheet with the title 'Volume of Cylinders, Cones, & Spheres: Sum It Up'.

Solve problems involving the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres.

8.7C
Converse of Pythagorean Theorem
Coloring Page

A math worksheet titled 'Converse of Pythagorean Theorem Coloring Page' features football-shaped outlines with side lengths labeled, inviting students to determine which sets of measurements form right triangles.

Use the converse of the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems.

8.8C
Solving Equations

Stacking Pyramid

A worksheet for solving equations using a stacking pyramid game.

Solve one-variable equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign using rational number coefficients and constants.

8.12D
Simple & Compound Interest
Task Cards

Two task cards for a math lesson on simple and compound interest. The cards feature word problems about earning interest on bank accounts.

Calculate and compare simple interest and compound interest earnings.
